Job Article - Design Engineer - Naval Architecture

Job Overview:

At Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, we are looking for a Design Engineer - Naval Architecture to join our team in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Your main task will be providing engineering and technological solutions for complex marine engineering projects, working closely with other departments such as estimating, production, and project management. You will guide and oversee the naval architecture activities for marine and offshore projects.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide critical technical inputs to the design engineering process during stages such as problem definition, conceptual design, preliminary design, detailed design, and design communication.
2. Prepare, review, and issue the docking and lifting plan for all vessels in the yard for Graving & Floating dock.
3. Clarify technical issues related to the docking and lifting plans.
4. Review pre-bid technical specifications and develop design inputs, ensuring compliance with classification and statutory rules, and updating the Head of Marine & Offshore about the naval architecture scope.
5. Develop the vessel weight control report and issue periodic weight control reports.
6. Conduct stability calculations for vessels as required by the contract.
7. Develop inclining and dead weight survey procedures and carry out inclining tests with appointed 3rd party/client.
8. Prepare Bollard test procedures and attend Bollard pull tests.
9. Update the vessel GA & Fire & Safety plans for all vessels as required per contract.
10. Develop Jacking trial, Preloading test, Lifeboat test, and other procedures and calculations.
11. Coordinate with Classification Society to address any class comments.
12. Ensure engineering deliverables are completed as per the agreed project schedule and with acceptable quality.
13. Coordinate with clients, classification societies, and vendors on technical requirements for the project.
14. Provide timely support and advice to other trades on naval architectural issues.
15. Lead the team on weight control and dead weight surveys for the project.
16. Estimate man-hours during the bidding stage of the project.
17. Monitor man-hours spent developing drawings upon project award.
18. Evaluate client comments and identify potential change orders.
19. Ensure yard safety standards are followed during the development of lifting and docking plans.
20. Demonstrate safe behavior on site and in the office.
21. Ensure drawings and designs meet contract technical specs and class rules.
22. Ensure drawings are produced to meet department KPIs for quality.

Qualifications, Experience, and Required Skills:

• Qualifications: Degree/Diploma in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience.
• Preferred Experience: Experience in Classification societies, design consultancy, or shipyards.

Technical Competencies:

• Engineering and technical solutions (Marine & Offshore - Structural, Electrical & Instrumentation, Naval Architecture, Piping, and Mechanical disciplines).
• Business process knowledge.
